077 – Independence Day – 2019

Today is Independence Day. Rather than wishing America a “Happy Birthday”, we should be celebrating the independence of the 50 states. We’ll ponder this more next, on The Constitution Study.

Paul Engel

Like many of you, I am a product of the public schools. Like many of you I thought the Constitution was for lawyers and judges. One day I read the Constitution, and was surprised to find I didn't need a law degree to understand it. Then I read the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers and even the Anti-Federalist Papers. As I learned more and more about our founding fathers and documents I saw how little we know about how our country was designed to work and how many people just didn't care. I started The Constitution Study to help those who also want read and study our Constitution.

  1. Hi Paul,

    Just a quick point:

Independence was formally declared on July 2, 1776. On July 4, 1776, Congress approved the final text of the Declaration. It wasn’t signed until August 2, 1776.

    1. Actually, the Lee Resolution to separate from Great Britain was adopted on July 2nd, and the language of the declaration debated until and finally approved on the 4th. So while the legislative decision was made in the 2nd, the official announcement was on the 4th, even though most of the signers didn’t out hand to parchment until August 2nd. That, I Believe is why we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th.
