While it has become more and more obvious that freedom of certain religions has been under attack in the United States lately, it is disturbing how many people are willing to walk by such situations without a second glance. Similarly, the forces coming after American’s right to defend themselves seem to find little resistance, at least at the national level.
It reminds me of a poem by Martin Niemöller:
First, they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
I wonder if those who didn’t find it necessary to rise to the aid of the religious and gun owner supporters will one day wish they had as their rights of conscience and self-defense are attacked?
