Tennessee State House Passes Immigration Enforcement Bill, Legislation to Track Number of Illegal Aliens in Schools
The Tennessee State House on Monday passed two immigration bills as part of the effort to make the Volunteer State a national model for cooperating with the federal government on immigration enforcement.
House Bill (HB) 1704 by State House Majority Leader William Lamberth (R-Portland) would create the new Class A misdemeanor offense of intentionally failing or refusing to leave the United States while subject to a final order of removal. It would also make it a Class A misdemeanor to illegally enter the country, or be found in Tennessee, after previously being denied entry, deported, or otherwise removed from the United States.

“Today’s findings reveal sweeping Title IX violations by Jefferson County Public Schools — denying fairness and equality to female students by allowing males into their private facilities, overnight accommodations, and athletics,” Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey said in a statement.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) concluded that a Colorado school district violated federal civil rights law by allowing male students to access female bathrooms, locker rooms and overnight accommodations and to compete in girls sports .

Boasberg Blocks Justice Department’s Subpoenas of Jerome Powell
U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ruled in court documents unsealed Friday that the Justice Department cannot subpoena Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, stating it was using the subpoenas as a tactic to pressure Powell into lowering interest rates.
The Justice Department issued the grand jury subpoenas as part of a criminal investigation into Powell, which is led by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.

Tennessee State Lawmakers Advance Bill to Require English Comprehension to Obtain Driver’s License
Lawmakers in both chambers of the Tennessee General Assembly this week advanced legislation that would require applicants to prove their ability to read English before receiving a full driver’s license and require proof of citizenship to register a vehicle.
House Bill (HB) by State Representative Kip Capley (R-Summertown) was first advanced on Tuesday by the State House Transportation Committee, who approved the legislation for transfer to the Finance, Ways, and Means Committee in a 16-3 vote. The bill was previously approved by a subcommittee last month in an 8-1 vote.
