Political segregation

For most of us, the word “segregation” leaves a bad taste in our mouths. We remember stories of segregated schools, drinking fountains, and restaurants. While legal racial segregation waned decades ago, there is a new segregation taking its place: political segregation.

Political segregation is the act of separating people from a lawful action merely due to their political positions or beliefs. We talk about Donald Trump being denied access to the ballot without due process, but not the rights of millions of Americans to vote for whom they want. Isn’t it ironic that those who claim to be protecting democracy are denying people their right to choose for themselves? Then there’s the story out of Missouri where a defendant was denied the right to a jury of their peers because some of them were devout Christians. Even a person’s right to only have those who can legally vote do so is being used to segregate people based on their politics. I don’t even get into the fact that the media and social media are suppressing political ideas while big businesses are denying people their ability to use access and use their products based on their politics.

Segregation has reared its ugly head again in America. Will We, the People, stand by and let it happen?

Paul Engel

Like many of you, I am a product of the public schools. Like many of you I thought the Constitution was for lawyers and judges. One day I read the Constitution, and was surprised to find I didn't need a law degree to understand it. Then I read the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers and even the Anti-Federalist Papers. As I learned more and more about our founding fathers and documents I saw how little we know about how our country was designed to work and how many people just didn't care. I started The Constitution Study to help those who also want read and study our Constitution.
